On a hot afternoon in Washington DC, these grackles found a great way to cool off in a fountain. Plain and black from a distance, common grackles are beautiful birds close up when sunlight is reflected off their plumage. They are iridescent glossy green, blue or purplish about the head and neck and coppery, bronzed or variably colored on the rest of the body. Their pale golden eyes have an intent, almost stern-looking gaze.
