Rimrock Panorama

A panoramic composite spans a stretch of rimrock east of Bend, Oregon. According to geologists, the Dry River Canyon was formed during the Pleistocene period (10,000 to 1.8 million years ago) when an ancient lake in the Millican Valley breached its west end after heavy rains and/or ice age melt, ripping a canyon through the basalt and flowing northwest to the Crooked River. What's left behind is this 100-foot high rimrock escarpment, revealing a 20-foot thick layer of ancient basalt lava flow on top of volcanic ash of an earlier eruption.
