It was the largest amphitheatre built during the Roman Empire and was capable of seating 70,000 spectators, the amphitheatre was used until 524 when a series of earthquakes severely damaged the structure. It was originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. The building was used for gladiatorial combat until Christianity slowly ended this form of entertainment.
