Which size image is best to use on an ebook cover?

Can someone please tell me which size image is best for an ebook cover? I have to teach myself how to make my first ebook cover (which I'll sell with my ebook on Amazon). I will not be using the image for any printing, only for the ebook cover. Thanks.

At first glance I would say you don't need higher than screen resolution, but whether you choose to limit the resolution in the eBook or not you may want to buy the higher resolution in case you want to print it later and can't buy the file...

When uploading for Amazon, you should follow their requirements. I am quoting from Amazon kdp.

Requirements for the size of your cover art have an ideal height/width ration of 1.6, this means:

• A minimum of 625 pixels on the shortest side and 1000 pixels on the longest side
• For best quality, your image would be 1563 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side

For your convenience, it is good to have a bigger image, so that you can crop and modify as required.

Yes 2500 pixels on the largest side seems good to start.
