Some days ago I bought a 5d Mark II and used the Sigma Zoom lens 28-300 mm 1:3.5-6.3 DL to take some pics on trial. Used this lens formerly with my analog Eos 50E. But with the 5d the results were not satisfying. Now I got a Canon EF 35-350 mm f/3.5-5.6 L USM but without IS... With flash the results are quite good. Unfortunately the weather is very bad at the moment so I could not take pics with natural daylight. Does somebody has any experiences with this lens? Is the the missing IS a big problem? I would appreciate all informations regarding this lens! Thanks!!!
Cant help with that particular lens, I have a lens Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD but I guess that if you use that rule of thumb for a shutter speed equal to the inverse of the focal distance you wont miss the IS, sometimes it happens to me that when I shoot with a tripod and the IS off, then I forget to switched ON again, and I dont realize of that if I follow the rule of thumb., the photos are still sharp
Some years ago i used a Canon 28-300 L USM but not with a 5d MKII or MkI. I will never use this combo, try a Coke bottle. There will be the same results. How much do you pay for the 35-350 ? Try to sell it and buy some primes. You will be amazed !!!
For moving objects you can´t use IS and for other one you can use a tripod. The BQ also suffering with IS !!!
I dont have that experience, I use a 70-300 IS lens, not the L, the quality of the images is often good enough, sometimes the sensor of the 5DMII surpasses what this lens can bring of detail, but I am ok with it, its better if I am not using 300mm, say 250 or below is quite ok.
For me, IS is essencial, because normally I am taking images of stationary objects, I mean, architecture details, and if I can do it handheld, much better.
You won't miss the IS till you've had it. It can be worth a couple stops. How is the lens on a tripod at 350mm, 5.6 and 1/30th? And then of course, compared to what? Shoot it if it works for you... if not, sell it and try again. It's a tool.
Thanks all for your replies! I will use the lens now for some time and test it out... In case there is somebody in the vastness of the DT-world who is using that lens, I would still appreciate to learn from his / her experience!
