The American national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, was written by lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, a prisoner aboard a British ship, as he watched the bombardment of the fort by British forces during the War of 1812 on September 13, 1814.

Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Maryland. Visitors may learn the history of the fort and surrounding structures in this elegant building. It houses many artifacts and hosts tours and films depicting the famous battles here. Soldiers stationed at the fort shown in the background defending Baltimore during the War of 1812.
