Beech Bark Disease on a solitary tree trunk. Beech bark disease is a disease that causes death and defects in American Beech trees. Fagus grandifolia. It splits open the bark of the tree providing these dramatic results. They almost look like hearts. Sadly, it will kill the tree. It is a fungal related illness. Once the tree has it, there is no treatment except to try and control its spread.
