Poison Snail. The rice field snail & x28;Pila ampullacea& x29; is a type of water snail that is easily found in tropical Asian freshwater, such as in rice fields, ditches and lakes. This shelled animal is also known as the gondang snail, rice snail, water snail, or tutut. The shape of the rice field snail is a bit like a mulberry snail, it is still related, but the rice snail has a dark green to black shell color.

Pila ampullacea, together with Pila pesmei, are indigenous rice field snail species traditionally eaten in Thailand that have been displaced by the invasive golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata. In Indonesia, it is famous as keong sawah or tutut as traditional cuisine which is often boiled or grilled as satay.
