The Slimnic fortress on the hills over Slimnic village. In the 16th century Sibiu and Medias were two important burgs in the south of Transylvania and the road connecting them was constantly under threat from enemy attacks. Thus, in mid-16th century, in several stages, they erected the Slimnic fortress on the road from Sibiu to Medias. This was a simple military architecture complex with some defence towers. Inside, the fortress also hosted a small gothic chapel, the only one which can still be admired today. The planned hall church was never finished due to the countless attacks on the fortress. For instance, the sieges from 1529 and 1706 proved to be devastating for the fortress. The church was built in the second half of the 14th century and its patron was St. Bartholomew. Around the year 1500 the wooden ceiling of the church is replaced with a gothic vault. The fortress is placed on a hill above Slimnic and its high, reddish ruins, because of the brick are noticeable from afar. Enemy towers stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

The entrance was often the weakest part in a circuit of defences. To overcome this, the gatehouse was developed, allowing those inside the castle to control the flow of traffic. In earth and timber castles, the gateway was usually the first feature to be rebuilt in stone. The front of the gateway was a blind spot and to overcome this, projecting towers were added on each side of the gate in a style similar to that developed by the Romans. The gatehouse contained a series of defences to make a direct assault more difficult than battering down a simple gate. Typically, there were one or more portcullises – a wooden grille reinforced with metal to block a passage – and arrowslits to allow defenders to harry the enemy. The passage through the gatehouse was lengthened to increase the amount of time an assailant had to spend under fire in a confined space and unable to retaliate. Montalcino rises in the heart of southern Tuscany. In the Middle Age the territory of Montalcino was divided between four ecclesiastical areas: Arezzo, Chiusi, Grosseto and Siena. The castle is today practically intact. Its construction was begun in 1361 on the southern vertex of the 13th century city walls, incorporating the keep of S. Martino and the S. Giovanni tower. It looks as classic castle-enclosure, with pentagonal plant endowed with towers to all the angles. The tower of southeast is placed by the side of the keep. The walls and the towers have still practicable the complete watch-walk endowed of machicoulis projection from the wall made of stone which has openings through which the defenders can fire upon an enemy directly below in stone, supported by bows on brackets with inverted pyramid form. The northern towers are open on the side facing the courtyard. The castle incorporated also an ancient little basilica that became the chapel of the fortification, and its rests are still visible near the northeast tower. On the south side rise the mighty Medicean rampart, added by Cosimo at the half of the 16th century. Enemy towers stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

The highest of the towers was the Tower. It differed from other towers in a number of features: it had a larger diameter, there was a huge niche inside, there was no exit inside the fortress on the lower tier. The most interesting feature of the tower was that at its base there was a small arched passage, which served for unexpected forays into the enemy. The distinctive feature of Vyshka was given by two decorative crosses made of limestone outside the tower. Enemy towers stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

The Mendeleev Tank was a proposed early tank design by Russian naval engineer Vasiliy Mendeleev son of Russian scientist Dimitri Mendeleev who created the modern periodic table. The vehicle was envisioned by Mendeleev during his time working at the Kronshtadt Marine Engineering School in Saint Petersburg Russia from 1911 to 1915. Its purported purpose was to be a "landship" immune to all enemy fire and able to cross large battlefields while providing heavy artillery support to troops using a 120 mm gun.
