Then Vice President Walter 'Fritz' Mondale speaks at a Democratic Party rally in Chicago, Illinois in 1980 to boost support for the Jimmy Carter-Walter Mondale ticket in the upcoming presidential election of 1980. Mondale, a 2-term liberal Democrat was a transformative VP under Carter from 1977-1981. He greatly expanded the role, power, and significance of the office. The liberal Minnesotan helped push forth legislation on civil rights, aid to schools, environment, consumer affairs and measures uplifting the poor. Mondale turned back a strong challenge from telegenic Colorado Senator Gary Hart to secure the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 1984. He mocked the lack of substance to Hart's ideas with the devastating line, 'Where's the Beef? ' His campaign got off to a rocky start when it was revealed that his running mate, Senator Thomas Eagleton of Missouri had undergone psychiatric treatment. He then selected Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro of New York, and she became the first woman vice-presidential candidate from either party. Mondale suffered an astonishingly one-sided electoral defeat (reminiscent of George McGovern's trouncing by Richard Nixon in 1972) at the hands of incumbent Ronald Reagan, winning only in Minnesota and the District of Columbia. He died at his home in Minneapolis on April 19, 2021 at the age of 93. Gary carter stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures
