Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺? , lit. Temple of the Golden Pavilion), officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺? Deer Garden Temple), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. [2] The garden complex is an excellent example of Muromachi period garden design. [3] The Muromachi period is considered to be a classical age of Japanese garden design. [4] The correlation between buildings and its settings were greatly emphasized during this period. [4] It was a way to integrate the structure within the landscape in an artistic way. The garden designs were characterized by a reduction in scale, a more central purpose, and a distinct setting. [5] A minimalistic approach was brought to the garden design, by recreating larger landscapes in a smaller scale around a structure. [5] It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Landscape, and it is one of 17 locations comprising the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage Site. [6] It is also one of the most popular buildings in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually. [7]. Larger temple stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

A local artisan carefully works on a section of decorative mosaic for a Taiwanese temple. The composition shows a traditional cut-and-paste technique using colorful porcelain and glass shards, meticulously arranged by hand. The scene is softly lit, emphasizing the textured surface of the temple wall and the bright materials being embedded. The artisan's focus is visible through the thoughtful placement of each piece, creating patterns rooted in cultural symbolism. Each shard, though irregular, plays a precise role in forming a larger, cohesive design. The hand-cut tiles, with their varying hues and reflective surfaces, evoke both spontaneity and tradition. This quiet documentation of a working moment captures more than a taskit reflects a legacy of devotion, patience, and artistic continuity passed down through generations. A tribute to the beauty of preservation, and the human hands that keep cultural forms alive. Larger temple stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

The Temple of the Warriors complex consists of a large stepped pyramid fronted and flanked by rows of carved columns depicting warriors. This complex is analogous to Temple B at the Toltec capital of Tula, and indicates some form of cultural contact between the two regions. The one at Chichen Itza, however, was constructed on a larger scale. Larger temple stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

Avantipur was founded by king Avantivarman who reigned from AD 855 - 883 situated at a distance of 18 miles from Srinagar on the Anantnag cart-road, represents the town of Avantipura. The site has two temples. The larger one, Shiva-Avantishvara, is marked by massive walls some half a mile beneath the town on the outskirts of village Jaubror. The subsidiary shrines are to the rear corner of the courtyard. But the complex has, over the years, lost its grandeur and has been reduced to ruins, though it is still visited by the devout. The temples here have groups of figures of both sexes, engaged in drinking, making love, and other such things. The sculptured reliefs are principally found on the walls of the entrance and the flank walls of the stairs. It is probable that not only the plain wall surfaces but also the reliefs were covered with a fine coat of lime plaster, on which the addition of colour defined the more delicate details of decoration. The base is either a plain square block with the upper edge rounded off or is elaborately molded. Half a mile up is Avantisvami-Vishnu, a better-preserved temple. The ancient city derived its principal reputation from two temples, which are considered second only to the Temple of Dendera as specimens of the sacred structures of Egypt. The larger temple is in good preservation, and is being excavated. The smaller temple, sometimes, but improperly, called a Typhonium, is apparently an appendage of the former, and its sculptures represent the birth and education of the youthful deity, Horus, whose parents Noum, or Kneph and Athor, were worshipped in the larger edifice. Preah Khan (Khmer:?????????????? "Royal Sword") is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. It is located northeast of Angkor Thom and just west of the Jayatataka baray, with which it was associated. It was the Centre of a substantial organization, with almost 100,000 officials and servants. The temple is flat in design, with a basic plan of successive rectangular galleries around a Buddhist sanctuary complicated by Hindu satellite temples and numerous later additions. Like the nearby Ta Prohm, Preah Khan has been left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins. Larger temple stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

Lankatilaka Temple is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of traditional Sinhalese temple architecture. Built on a rock, the temple is reached by a long series of rock cut steps. An arched passage of the image house leads through a Mandapa (hall) into the inner sanctum which is richly decorated with beautiful floral designs. The two side walls and the ceiling are decorated with paintings. In the inner sanctum is a colossal seated image of the Buddha. Thousands of years of Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian heritage can be found in temples great and small that dot this small and devoutly spiritual island. The big daddy of all Sri Lankan temples is Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth, said to contain a tooth belonging to none other than the Buddha himself, but even the smallest of village temples can offer up beautiful artistic beauty carved by artisans centuries ago – as well as a fascinating insight into Sri Lankan religious culture. Some of the larger temples play host to important festivals and timing your visit to coincide with one is likely to be a highlight of a Sri Lankan journey. The temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, was built in the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BCE. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information on language, myth and religion during the Greco-Roman period in ancient Egypt. Ptolemaic temple, built the reign of Cleopatra VII. Of all the temple remains in Egypt, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is the most completely preserved. Built from sandstone blocks, the huge Ptolemaic temple was constructed over the site of a smaller New Kingdom temple, oriented east to west, facing towards the river. The later structure faces north to south and leaves the ruined remains of the older temple pylon to be seen on the east side of the first court. No larger remains dating earlier than the 5th Dynasty have been found at Edfu. Larger temple stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat used in protected waters of the Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean including Malta, and particularly along the Nile in Egypt. Its rig consists of one or two lateen sails. They are usually able to board ten-some passengers and the crew consists of two or three people. Despite being made obsolete by motorboats and ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities like Aswan or Luxor. They are especially popular among tourists who can enjoy their quieter and calmer mood than motorboats have to offer. The Nile (Arabic: النيل‎, transliteration: an-nīl, Ancient Egyptian iteru or 'pī, Coptic piaro or phiaro) is a major north-flowing river in Africa, generally regarded as the longest river in the world. The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Lake Nasser (Arabic: بحيرة ناصر; transliterated: Buhayrat Nasir) is a vast reservoir in southern Egypt and northern Sudan. Strictly, Lake Nasser refers only to the much larger portion of the lake that is in Egyptian territory (83% of the total), with the Sudanese preferring to call their smaller body of water Lake Nubia (Arabic: بحيرة نوبية; transliterated: Buhayrat Nubiya). It was created as a result of the construction of the Aswan High Dam across the waters of the Nile between 1958 and 1970. The lake is named after President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who initiated the controversial High Dam project. Larger temple stock images, royalty-free photos and pictures

The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism and is the place to which Jews turn during prayer, and the Western Wall is considered holy due to its connection to the Temple. Due to the rabbinic ban on praying on the Mount, the Wall is the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray. Ayutthaya, Thailand - June 9, 2015: Building mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam stay near temple in Ayutthaya, Thailand. There are strict and detailed requirements in Sunni fiqh for a place of worship to be considered a mosque, with places that do not meet these requirements regarded as musallas. There are stringent restrictions on the uses of the area formally demarcated as the mosque (which is often a small portion of the larger complex), and, in the Islamic Sharia law, after an area is formally designated as a mosque, it remains so until the Last Day. Many mosques have elaborate domes, minarets, and prayer halls, in varying styles of architecture. Mosques originated on the Arabian Peninsula, but are now found in all inhabited continents. The mosque serves as a place where Muslims can come together for salat (prayer) as well as a center for information, education, and dispute settlement. The imam leads the congregation in prayer.
